Sloppy Nepal faces six-wicket defeat on World Cup return

In front of a loud crowd of over 10,000 Nepalese fans at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Nepal faced a disheartening six-wicket defeat against the Netherlands in their opening fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Nepal struggled to make an impact. Batting first, they posted a modest total of 106 runs in 19.2 overs. The Nepali batsmen found it difficult to tacle the Dutch bowlers swing and bounce. Rohit Kumar Paudel was the top scorer for Nepal with a determined 35 runs off 37 balls, but his efforts were not enough to anchor the innings.

Karan KC’s quickfire 17 off 12 balls, including two sixes, provided some late fireworks but could only help Nepal reach triple figures.

The Dutch bowling attack, led by Player-of-the-Match Tim Pringle, proved to be the difference between these two sides. Pringle claimed 3 wickets for 20 runs in his four overs, while Logan van Beek, Paul van Meekeren, and Bas de Leede collectively took seven wickets, dismantling the Nepali batting lineup.

In reply, the Netherlands chased down the target of 107 runs in 18.4 overs with six wickets in hand. Max O’Dowd played an unbeaten knock of 54 runs from 48 deliveries, featuring four boundaries and a six. His innings proved to be the match-winner, particularly after Nepal’s skipper dropped a crucial catch in the 18th over.

Nepal, renowned for their fielding potential, had a poor performance on the field. They dropped three catches and missed a key run-out opportunity, allowing the Netherlands to capitalize on these mistakes.

Nepali bowlers, including Sompal Kami, Dipendra Singh Airee, and Abinash Bohara, each managed to claim a wicket, but it wasn’t enough to stop the flow of runs from the Dutch batsmen.

Nepal will look to bounce back in their next match against Sri Lanka on June 12 at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium in Lauderhill. .
